Graph showing the temperature fluctuation of the upper 2 cm of mineral soil over time for three fire types (values are approximate) -- Grass fire: temperature rises quickly from 30 to 130 degrees Centigrade in the first 7 minutes, then drops to 80 degrees Centigrade over the next 9 minutes; Shrub fire: temperature rises quickly from 30 to 200 degrees Centigrade in the first 23 minutes, remains at 200 degrees for about 7 minutes, then drops to 125 degrees Centigrade over the next 17 minutes; Duff fire: temperature does not rise for the first 2 hours, then temperature rises slowly from 30 to 55 degrees Centigrade from 2 to 6 hours out, temperature then rises quickly from 55 to 385 degrees Centigrade from 6 to 16 hours out, slows down but continues to rise from 385 to 415 degrees Centigrade from 16 to 17.5 hours out, then quickly drops to 300 degrees Centigrade over the next hour.
