 Risk evaluation for sites dominated by root pathogens.

Root diseases are widespread problems for forest managers in the western U.S. Work is underway to help determine which forest ecosystems are at greatest risk, and develop management guidelines which will help control or minimize damage caused by these diseases.

Results of Studies:

  • Scientists have established a comprehensive identification protocol for Armillaria root diseases in the western U.S. Clarification of the taxonomy and behavior of this important class of root diseases is critical to understanding the health status of western forests.

  • Risk ratings for root disease damage have been developed for old-growth forests and certain forest management activities in the Pacific Northwest.

  • Scientists have developed a forest health ecoclass system that helps predict behavior of many native pests in western forests.
