Wood stake subplots were installed in December 1998 as part of the Planting Bed Height study being conducted by Westvaco Corporation at South Cain Bay, SC. The objective of this industry study is to determine the effect of planting bed height on southern pine growth (Pinus taeda) and survival on a poorly drained soil. The bedding heights tested were: (1) double bedded, (2) single bedded (current operational treatment), (3) half bed, and (4) flat (no bedding). Each treatment was replicated three times. Twenty-five stakes of both loblolly pine and aspen were installed around soil moisture, temperature, and redox data collectors in each plot - a total of 600 stakes (25 stakes x 2 species x 4 treatments x 3 replicates). Five stakes of each species and season were removed from all microplots every 6 months starting in May 1999. The final stakes were removed in April 2001. Analysis of the wood samples is continuing.
